For the duration of the Shards of Alara release events, there will be an 8-player Extended and ALA Block Constructed queue available in the 8-Player Constructed room. Just like the Standard queue, these tournament cost 6 tix to enter and pay out 5-3-2-2.

We have disabled casual play replays for the weekend in order to reduce the likelyhood of our having problems during the busy release event period. Replays are just a peice of the puzzle at this point. They don't directly cause performance issues, but they can make existing issues worse.

Trading escrows have been very slow this weekend as the total system load on the database has increased. We regret the poor performance of trades, and will take a look at the way our digital object server's socket layer is prioritizing messages to see if we can make any short term configuration changes that will help. Long term we solve this problem by completing the oft mentioned collection server.

XP users: We have found that minimizing the client releases of a lot of memory usage by the client. If you have been playing for a number of hours and the client is using a lot of memory and slowing down, try just minimizing and then opening the client. We are looking into this issue, which seems to have to do with how our client interacts with .NET.

We are looking into the issue with clan requests. The controls on the clan names when users request clans are not working correctly. There was some recent work done to solve problems caused by clan invitations that targeted off line users. QA has done a pass on all the clan bugs and I will be determining what we can get fixed in the Tempest release.

Thanks for playing! We are looking forward to getting the new skins out with this week's build. They aren't perfect, but the new textures make everything much easier on the eyes, and text will be easier to read. Again my usual disclaimer that the reskin is not a major UI usability redesign. There is much more to come on the usability front.

We are keeping replays disabled while we work on an issue with excessive memory usage in Game Server instances. This has reduced the number of games that a server can host (replays are game instances) before the game servers start to use virtual memory. Virtual memory usage could slow down gameplay considerably.

We will be spinning up some additional game servers Tuesday (Oct 28) and during the downtime Wednesday to keep gameplay as responsive as possible.

Hopefully we will be able to get replays enabled when the additional Game Servers are online.

Magic Online Update - 2D Shards of Alara Avatars

Many will have noted that the Shards of Alara avatar art is 2D. The new art may be viewed in the collection binder even if you haven’t yet added a Shards avatar to your collection. Select the Vanguard set in the collection binder set filter and set your owned filter to >= 0. Or just search on 'Mayael' if you wish.

Our Ux Manager Adriana thankfully came along and stopped me from getting all of the 3D avatars remade. We have a strong desire to resolve the quality issues. She correctly pointed out that WotC is pretty good at getting our hands on excellent 2D art. Thus, over the coming months, all of the 3D avatar models will be replaced with high quality 2D versions. Our upcoming set releases will have 2D avatar art from the beginning. We will be working through the existing avatars and replacing as many as we can have ready with each set release. Getting the avatar art recommissioned doesn't require any dev resources and won't interfere with our development efforts on leagues, the collection server, and the implementation of improved client usability.

Adriana is aware that we do have a requirement that the position of players at tables be represented, particularly in drafts. The Ux team will find a way to present that information to the users as part of the usability updates.

Casual play game replays were turned back on in the system at the end of the Shards of Alara release events. We have added more game servers to the system and made some progress on reducing the memory usage in the game servers. These actions should ensure that replays remain available even during future set releases.

Tournament replays for recent matches in Swiss events are active in our latest Tempest beta build and will be available when we deploy the Tempest build to production on December 3rd. Tempest goes on sale December 8.

To replay a tournament match, users will double click one of the matches for a round listed in the lower section of the Event Info scene. If there was more than one game in the match a dialog will pop listing each of the games. Selecting a game will start the replay.

We won't initially have replays available for matches from 8 man queues, as we currently don't list the matches in those rooms. Our designers are coming up with a way to show a single elim bracket for an event. This will give us a way for users to start a replay for a match in a single elimination tournament.

This is being done due to the upcoming US holiday and to allow us to enter the JVC deck build.

The JVC Magic Online deck will be available for sale after this downtime for $19.99.

As part of celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday here in the US we will be adding some additional events and prizes to our regular schedule as a thank you to you the players.

Nix Tix

Between 9 AM PDT Wednesday November 26 and 11:59PM PDT Sunday November 30 all drafts in the 8-player draft room will be Nix Tix events, meaning you only need to supply the boosters. Regular draft prizes will be awarded but no event tickets will be charged for these events!

Additional prizes on Daily Events

In addition, we will be adding one of the upcoming Jace vs. Chandra decks to the prize pool for all daily events held during this same period. The 1st place winner of each Daily Event (including the Game in the Gulf Prelim events) scheduled between 9 AM PDT Wednesday November 26 and 11:59PM PDT Sunday November 30 will win their own copy of the new Jace vs. Chandra deck in addition to the standard prizes for that event!

After the 11/25 downtime, cards in Jace vs. Chandra will be legal in Classic and formats whose legality is Classic-based. These cards are legal in other formats if they are printed in a set legal in that format.

There is also a new format -- Duel Decks -- which is convenient for playing any of the Duel Decks products (currently Elves vs. Goblins and Jace vs. Chandra) against one another in the casual rooms. For your convenience, when you select Duel Decks, the client will create a dropdown for you to choose one of the Duel Decks. While it's designed for the two decks in the same product to play each other, nothing prevents you from playing with, say, Elves, while your opponent is playing Chandra. You must have all the cards on the decklist in your collection to play a deck in this format.

The fine folks in development have informed me that a bug was discovered with casual game replays, so they have been disabled until after tomorrow's downtime. The bug has been fixed and will be a part of tomorrow's downtime. We currently plan on returning from downtime with replays available. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Duel scene Changes

* Coin flip animation no longer repeats when user hits F4 or F6
* Client will now show color, creature, and land type substitutions in game text of card.
